| Comparing apples and oranges is always hard, and comparing Display Models to Digital
Animation is similar. Both have great strengths, and weaknesses. But let's try to say
which works best in several different environments. If we first look at a tradeshow
setting, I'd go with the Display Model. A properly done model has a "grabber
effect" in a tradeshow that is missing in a "digital". After all, we still
equate a monitor screen to our home TV, and discount its value. You get around that
problem if you use a video wall for your presentation. Doing that, the total usage cost
for both approaches will be similar. Of course there's no risk of damage in shipping with
the "digital".
For sales presentations to a small group, the "digital" can't be beat. The
simplicity of walking into a meeting with only a laptop, and giving a polished
presentation that answers every question can't be touched if you've ever struggled to
setup a model in a meeting room with only minutes to go before the customer enters.
For lobby applications, we're back to a toss-up. Both work extremely well, because you
are addressing an audience that isn't being overwhelmed with sights and sounds from every
direction. Here, I'll give a slight edge to "digital" because of the ease of
updating a presentation.
Remember, neither approach is worth anything if it fails to communicate the information
you set out to convey. |
