Our approach to creating animations is heavily influenced by the methods we've used in designing and building display models. We start from the same point whether we're creating an animation or building a display model. We first need to answer, "What is our message, who is our target audience, and what will our presentation environment be?"

We then make certain we fully understand what we are presenting. We have strong technical backgrounds, and we're not afraid to ask dumb questions. If we don't fully understand the product, process, or service, we can't suggest. We determine what support information and existing content is available.

We sit down and rough out a presentation outline. The next step is storyboarding. This is often accomplished in several steps, since this is where we and the client interact and come to an agreement on what the animation will be. The storyboard would incorporate the narrative script. When the storyboard is presented, we include a detailed pricing proposal and production schedule.

Next we create the digital models, either from scratch, or by converting existing digital files into a format suitable for our software. Again, we approach creating digital models in the same way we've built display models. That means we only use the detail level needed to support the message we're getting across. We aren't after photorealistic approaches, because we feel that in most situations they do nothing to advance understanding of the message the presentation is giving. That's not to say that there aren't cases where we will want to work photorealistically, it's just that it must support the message, not detract from it. The same goes for the techniques we'll use in the animation. They must all support the message.

If the presentation is targeted to a tradeshow audience, we suggest keeping its length under 120 seconds. Animations geared towards small group sales meeting are often longer, and frequently interactive.

We use whatever software tool will best do the job. The overall objective is to create a presentation that attracts a viewer in a tradeshow or sales environment, conveys the sales message, and holds the viewer's attention for the duration of the presentation.
